Mer ondska i kristi namn

Jag läser många skeptiska, ateistiska och feministiska bloggar av amerikanska skribenter. Det går snabbt att förstå att man i den liberala, högultbildade amerikanska kulturen fruktar en person mer än någon annan: Rick Santorum. Tack och lov verkar det som om denna mörkerman i och med Romneys segrar i Arizona och Michigan kommer längre från presidentkandidatskapet än vad man tidigare trott.
Vad är det då som gör just Santorum så obehaglig i ett startfält utmärkt av teapartyister och bible-thumpers?
Kort sagt: Santorum är domninionist, fundamentalist, homfob, öppet kvinnofientlig och har flera gånger uttalat sig på ett sätt som inte kan tolkas som stödjande för de som drömmer om ett USA omvandlat till en högerkristen teokrati.
Några av de mer graverande citaten lyder:

"CO2 is a pollutant? Tell that to the plants." (Om GW)

"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything. " (Ang. Santorums syn på homosexuella.)

"In the Netherlands people wear a different bracelet if you're elderly and the bracelet is 'do not euthanize me.' Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands, but half the people who are euthanized every year, and it's 10 percent of all deaths for the Netherlands, half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don't go to the hospital, they go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, that they will not come out of that hospital if they go in with sickness." (För som vi alla vet leder skattefinansierad sjukvårsd till massavrättningar av äldre).

 "One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country. Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s OK; contraception is OK. It’s not OK. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be." (Gud förbjude att kvinnor får rätten till sin egen sexualitet).

"Well, you can make the argument that if she doesn’t have this baby, if she kills her child, that that, too, could ruin her life. And this is not an easy choice. I understand that. (Ja, eftersom fundamentalistisk religion bara kan existera tillsammans med djup okunskap kan man förstå att fundisarna är rädda för att högre utbildning blir tillgängligt för större grupper).

Sammanfattningsvis kan alltså Santorum av allt att döma inte ses som annat än en potentiellt farlig galning, styrd av religiösa vanföreställningar och med en människosyn som skulle göras en taliban stolt. Trots detta är en stor grupp amerikaner beredda att se honom som en lämplig ledare för ett av världens mäktigaste länder.
Goya sade att "förnuftets sömn skapar monster". När det gäller Santorum och hans hyllningskör ligger det närmare till hands att konstatera att där fundamentalismen går in, går vettet ut (eller kanske vice versa).
